Why Finals Week is My Favorite Week

By: Isa Basche Class of 2020 English Literature and I.E.S.

Finals week; a week usually filled with tests, term papers, stress, no sleep, and no fun. Despite popular opinion, finals week is by far my favorite week of the semester. Yep, you read that right. Finals week is my favorite time to be on campus. The week is filled with some perks, fun surprises, and my favorite Chapman traditions. Here are the five reasons why finals week is my favorite week of the semester.

#1: No Classes

Despite having to show up to take your exams, there are no classes during finals week. You can throw your normal class schedule away because there is a separate schedule for finals. Each of your classes will be assigned an exam period throughout the week. Usually, it is not during your normal class time or day. Only having to go to your classes once during the week to take your exams leaves you with a ton of free time. You have more time to study and get your work done without having to spend time going to every single class.

#2: Free Food

The amount of free food available during finals is incredible. Theoretically, if you are creative enough, you could go the entire week without paying for any food. For instance, the week of finals and before, the library has free cookies, coffee, and granola bars located on every single floor. It is a perfect study snack or great to grab if you are simply passing through the library. Also, throughout the week, the Dining Hall (most students refer to it as the “caf”) serves late night snacks. Stop in around 9PM every night and grab some nachos, pizza, or cookies for free!

#3: Puppies!

Need to de-stress or miss your pet from home? During finals week, they bring puppies into the Piazza (our main quad and social hub of campus) for students to pet and love on! Chill with the puppies, take selfies with them, and let their cuteness take all your worries away.

#4: Open 24 Hours

Throughout the week, my favorite hang out and study spots on campus are open 24 hours a day. Both the library and the student union are open and bustling with people all day and night. The student union has comfy couches and is a great place to get some studying done or simply relax. During finals, they set up coloring pages and snacks on long circular tables too. Being able to utilize this space at all hours is so convenient and useful.

#5: Midnight Breakfast

Midnight Breakfast happens the Monday of every finals week and is my absolute favorite Chapman tradition. Beginning at 10PM, our University Program Board serves free breakfast in our student union. Everything from scrambled eggs and bacon to fruit and pancakes are served–and most famously tots!! Students can stuff their faces while watching fun performances from our on-campus acapella and dance groups. It’s a great way to relax with friends and de-stress from school and finals week.
