Kait's Declassified: College of Educational Studies (CES) Survival Guide

Written By: Kaitlyn Zeigler Class of 2019

Tip #101- Professors

Never be afraid to get to know your professors!  They want to be there for you and help you to succeed.  They will push you to think critically and will ask you to support your views, but they are preparing you and helping to shape you in the best version of yourself!

Tip #205- Peer Advisors

Go to your peer advisors!  Not every college at Chapman offers this. IES is special for countless reasons, but with this one, you can get really good advice and be told first-hand how a class is.  However, don’t be afraid to go to professors or other people within the College of Education.

Tip #378- Make connections with other students

You’re going to see a lot of the same people in your classes… especially in the upper division classes.  Make connections with each other because it’ll be great for studying or trying to decide on a class!

Tip #454- Don’t be afraid to get involved

This counts for both inside and outside the College of Education!  Chapman has so much to offer and getting involved is an easy way to help Chapman feel more like home.  College of Education has different opportunities to network and find your place within our little community!

Tip #590- It’s all going to work out

Remember to breathe.  College can be a lot but it’s all going to work out.  If you don’t get every class you planned for, for that semester, find an alternative.  If you don’t get a great grade on a test, study harder. Remember you have control of it all.

Tip #623- Stand up for yourself

You can fight for you grade.  Never be afraid to ask a professor about extra credit or asking them to explain their reasoning for a specific score.  Meet up with them to ask how your progress is going in the class and build off of that.

Tip #741- Be prepared to be challenged

CES loves to challenge you to think outside the box and to provide evidence for your claims.  It can seem scary but building on other classes and bringing in outside information is how you know you’re succeeding.  Everything is connected.

Tip #820- CES skills are applicable in everything

Does comparing and contrasting Walt Disney and Charles Darwin sound crazy and impossible?  Think again. College of Education has a wonderful way of being able to connect to any and everything.  The skills that you learn can be brought to almost any other class because you know how to think critically and how to find the reasoning.

Tip #984- Growth

Don’t be afraid if you come in with one idea, only to come out with another.  CES is wonderful because of the diversity. If you no longer wish to be a teacher and want to be a real estate agent instead, totally doable within CES!  No longer want to do the traditional teaching route but still something with education? CES has your back! CES is designed to be organic and fluid for students to find what they really want to do in life.

Tip #1067- CES is Family

The Atallah College of Education is very lucky because of how much compassion is put into not only the classes but the people.  There will always be someone in your corner routing for you and wanting to see you become the best version of yourself.
