Danger Zone

By Aurelio De Anda, Senior, Screen Acting Major, Television Minor

Dear New Panthers,

Welcome to Chapman! You’re officially a college student, and you’re in for the best years of your life! Between meeting so many amazing people, awesome professors, learning about the tons of ways to get involved on campus, turning in homework on time, and dealing with homesickness, it all can be a little bit overwhelming. That’s why I thought I’d share with you a piece of advice one of my Orientation Leaders shared with me when I came to Chapman that helped me not fail college. Step out of your comfort zone! You can apply this to anything at Chapman. When you are in class and find yourself not understanding what’s happening, you’re lost during lectures, or you’re dealing with personal issues that are getting in the way of your academic success, please talk to someone. Even if it makes you uncomfortable. Tons of people at Chapman are willing to hear what you have to say, and there are an abundance of resources on campus that will help you be the best you can be. Meeting with your professor one-on-one during office hours is super laid back and trust me, if you show an inch of effort in seeking help, you will be met more than halfway. I’ve been blessed in meeting so many genuine people that have allowed me to open up to them and have helped me get through all of my struggles.

The Chapman community was way different than my community back home, and I was at first a little resistant to open up, so I only played it safe. I wouldn’t reach out to my professors, I’d bottle everything up until one day I decided to take risks and step out of my comfort zone. I could not do it alone. By letting go and not letting my discomfort tie me down, I was able to make friends I never thought I’d meet. I grabbed coffee with my professors, and I joined clubs and organizations that I thought “weren’t for me”. Step out of your comfort zone, you may end up joining a club you never thought you’d be passionate about. You may network in your industry by following up with an interview. You may end up going on a coffee date with a professor. Who knows, you may even meet the best man for your future wedding.
